Few artists have such a successful and remarked discography as Jason Kohnen, aka Bong-Ra. This Dutch electronic musician has made a name for himself over the recent years with his perfectly produced releases, always enriched with intense care for details, ranging from amazing artworks to the participation of other talented artists of all fields.
Praised by the late John Peel (and recording a Peel Session with him), among others, for the infectious ragga jungle anthems of his “Bikini Bandits, Kill! Kill! Kill!” album (whose video actually made it to MTV), Bong-Ra makes a 180° turn in 2005, leaves the swimwear in Jamaica and comes back, meaner than ever, under his new avatar, the “Grindkrusher”.
“Grindkrusher” is Bong-Ra’s homage to the grindcore metal of his youth, with a special focus to the early Earache roster. Huge guitar riffs and dark growls collide with his razor-sharp breaks and beats; Bong-Ra treats here grindcore as he did earlier with ragga, taking the dust off the genre, but keeping its essence alive. Headbangers from both the metal and electronic corners can but unite to infectious tracks such as “Bloody Cenotaph” or “Ram Waster”, and no doubt that Jo Bench, the female bass player of Bolt Thrower, would agree to the track named after her. It can’t really get any harder, rawer, or efficient. Over four tracks and two remixes by Doormouse and Sickboy, Bong-Ra has given birth to a memorable record that will stay as a classic. Make room for the krusher.
