Diesel - Chew Your Brains 12" (Audio Freaks phreaks026)

While the base of the music is still full frontal, filthy dubstep, most of the four tracks presented here also put hip hop vocals in the foreground, with quite competent MC and a lot of scratches, cuts and other niceties. In the end, while the sonorities are (filthy) dubstep, the feel of this record is firmly planted in hip hop, which is a welcome change from the otherwise middle-of-the-road brostep I could have expected.
File under hip-hop / dubstep & grime

-See all items from Diesel

-See all items on Audio Freaks

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

"To Die Early" also means to go back a decade in time and pay a strong homage to the whole illbient, downtempo scene back then spearheaded by Scorn, Bill Laswell or Spectre. Back when dubstep didn't exist yet, this combination of sluggish hip-hop beats, smokey dub melodies and darkish samples were the bassiest thing you could find, and it really feels good to dive again into this genre with these two musicians. A welcome album which, while not opening new ways, rediscover older, much appreciated ones.
File under industrial / downtempo

-See all items from Kirdec
-See all items from Le Diktat

-See all items on Syrphe

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

Out today: Whourkr's "4247 Snare Drums" album

It is here (or rather, they are here, the 4247 of them). Whourkr's new album, "4247 Snare Drums" (adn158) is officially out today, in all its absurdly complex, insanely hard and ridiculously detailled glory. The third album by this project by Igorrr and Mulk, this album is now available on all three formats: a gatefold, clear vinyl double LP (coming with the CD as a bonuc inside the sleeve), a digipack CD and as digital files.

Harder, faster, more guitars, more growls. Whourkr is Igorrr's metal alter-ego, and "4247 Snare Drums" is this act's third full length album. The product of a painstakingly long recording process by two musicians who are already seen as some of the hardest-working perfectionist in the scene, it is also a towering culmination of extreme metal run through equations, growls laid down mathematically, and guitars calculated for maximum efficiency. Polymorphous, violent, absurd but also extremely detailled, here comes the deadliest, ugliest and most precise sow-metal you could imagine.

But from times to times, a release stands even taller than the other ones. It was the case of the recent "Drastic / Dying Star" 12". This new two tracker on Union is also something I'd put in the pantheon of these musicians. The DJ Hidden is a surprisingly hardcore tune with very uncommon, electric-sounding melodies, very long pads and a deliciously (slightly) retro choice in beats. The TOA track on the other side, while not "crossbreed" is a splendid, changing and melodic piece, extremely efficient but humane, reminding me a bit of DJ Hidden's "Earth Cry". Kids, get this record.
File under drum'n'bass / hardcore

-See all items from DJ Hidden
-See all items from The Outside Agency

-See all items on Union Recordings

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

Hard hitting drum'n'bass with a slight sci-fi dubstep feeling, heavy basses and punishingly percussive drums, the whole thing done with brio and great production value: recommended.
File under drum'n'bass / dubstep & grime

-See all items from Various artists (compilations)

-See all items on Subsistenz

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

Driven, hard and very efficient, the title track has packed dancefloors all year with its gritty bassline and deep drops. On the B side, things might get only a little bit humane, as Matta deliver a couple more tunes featuring their signature majestic melodies and glitches. Massive, very detailed, fresh: another proof of this duo's remarkable and remarked talent.
File under drum'n'bass / dubstep & grime

-See all items from Sinister Souls

-See all items on Subtrakt

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

First because as much as I try, I can not shake off the feeling that at least the two opening tracks are ripping off Niveau Zero. From the melodies to the metal mash-up, this kind of catchy, in-your-face but accessible heavy dubstep just sounds very, very much like him here. Anyway, the album then morphes into hard drum'n'bass, of the Current Value or Limewax kind, and ventures at time in more gabber territories. It's all relatively well done (though never reaching the level of the aforementioned acts), extremely party-friendly and is something any DJ can spin with his ears closed. So not bad, but lacking a bit of originality.
File under drum'n'bass / dubstep & grime / hardcore

-See all items from Dub Elements

-See all items on Prspct

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

The first half presents four downtempo but highly jungle-infused tunes for which Bong-Ra hired Sole to lay prominent, grandiose vocals on top of a clear but percussive backdrop. The latest four tracks, though, are old-school, take-no-prisoner, instrumental Bong-Ra from his "Full Metal Racket" days: full-on guitar riffs and breakcore mash-ups, clearly written with his live-set in minds. The demon on the cover seems to me closer to this second half, but hats off to Bong-Ra for experimenting further with vocals in the first. Anyway, who am I to review this album: Bong-Ra fans know they need it.
File under breakcore / mash-up / hip-hop / drum'n'bass

-See all items from Bong-Ra

-See all items on Prspct

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

The opening "Toy" by Sinister Souls is one of the duo's best tracks so far in my opinion, and their following collaboration with Dean Rodell is very tasty as well, though not as catchy as the closing tune co-written with Balkansky. All in all a bassy, gritty, loud and solid record (adjectives which fit this club very well, actually).
File under drum'n'bass / dubstep & grime

-See all items from Balkansky
-See all items from Sinister Souls
-See all items from Dean Rodell

-See all items on Subtrakt

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

On the flip side, we get a really strong, hard and quite fast Current Value solo tracks, with a bit less rapidfire drums and a bit more bass (if that's possible) than usual. But, just as he proved with the aforementioned CD that he had given much thought and thrown a lot of care into the calmest of his projects, each side of this record makes sense. The title track is relatively close to "From Memory", though served with a steadier beat together with long, typically Semiomime melodies. On the flip side, things get a bit more electronica, a bit more broken, and open doors to sonorities which I hadn't heard from this project before. A very recommended, deep, relaxed but tricky record from an important project.
File under ambient / electronica / downtempo

-See all items from Semiomime

-See all items on Mindtrick

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

The strings are quite in the foreground this time around, as are the drums, and the atmosphere is less suffocating, more dreamy and sleepy than ever before. While staying as encompassing as ever, TMFDC has gained in jazz what it has lost in doom.
File under experimental / jazz / drones / (post) rock

-See all items from The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation

-See all items on Denovali

Ad Noiseam online store: http://www.adnoiseam.net/store

Bong-Ra - Monolith digital (Prspct PRSPCTRVLTLP001)

The opening "Quest" is a really good surprise as, instead of going full on dubstep, it's a syncopated, glitchy tunes full of breaks and with a good atmosphere.
This is not an Ad Noiseam release, but that's no reason not to open your ears and listen to the new remix album by our good friends of Aucan. This Italian band debut, "Black Rainbow", was one of our favorite releases of 2010, and just got the remix treatment in this free follow-up, the modestly titled "Black Rainbow Remixes".

Featuring remixes by Ad Noiseam-partner in crimes Niveau Zero, Dälek and Scorn (check these tracks below), this remix album is now available for free on Aucan website here. You'll need to post something on Facebook, Twitter, or enter your email address, but this 2.0 nod is well worth it. In other words: click that link, download that remix album, and enjoy.

Broken Note, Niveau Zero, Igorrr and the author of theses lines will perform on May 4th (that's this Friday, kids) in Wroclaw (Poland) at the 2012 edition of the Asymmetry festival. This should be a reason enough for all of you to come and party with us. And still, there're plenty of other great bands performing at this festival. As a way to introduce people to them, showcase them and convince you guys to come to this festival, your humble servant has prepared a free presentation mix for the whole event:

45 minutes, 20 bands, 23 tracks: here comes the Asymmetry Festival 2012 presentation mix by Nicolas Chevreux. Enjoy:

You can also download this mix for free here and pass it around. Note that we'll take this file down at one point, so hurry up to download it.

Sorry for the wild volume jumps: this mix was recorded live in one sitting and prepared with tracks varying greatly in genres and encoding (bad, bad musicians sending 128kbs mp3). Still, we hope that this will enable you to get acquainted to the bands you will either see or miss at the Asymmetry festival.

In other Asymmetry related news, but, Igorrr and I are asking you to come there. Igorrr in perfect Polish, and myself from the kitchen.

Do you remember that Matta wrote the music to an advert for Uk's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children back in November (if not, you can watch it here). This track (or what one could hear from it in this video) had raised a lot of attention, with many fans asking to listen to the whole thing. Lo and behold, Matta have obliged, and just uploaded this "Spiral" tune to their Soundcloud account. You can listen to it (and even download it) here or below. Enjoy.

Now that Whourkr's new "4247 Snare Drums" (adn158) can be pre-ordered, we've added no less than 5 audio excerpts from this album to its info page right here. And still, we know how much people like to get their audio from web 2.0 pages. Therefore, while those of you who care have been able to check this track out for a few days, here's the "Gastro-Equestre" track again, this time from the cloud (Official.fm and Soundcloud):

Pre-orders now taken for Whourkr's "4247 Snare Drums" album

The time has come to count them all: pre-orders are now taken for Whourkr's third album, "4247 Snare Drums" (Ad Noiseam adn158). You can now secure your copy on all formats: double gatefold LP coming with the CD, digipack CD or digital files. And remember, pre-orders get a rebate, so not only will you get your album before anybody else, but also for cheaper. This album will be officially released on May 14th, 2012.

Harder, faster, more guitars, more growls. Whourkr is Igorrr's metal alter-ego, and "4247 Snare Drums" is this act's third full length album. The product of a painstakingly long recording process by a musician who is already seen as one of the hardest-working perfectionist in the scene, it is also a towering culmination of extreme metal run through equations, growls laid down mathematically, and guitars calculated for maximum efficiency. Polymorphous, violent, absurd but also extremely detailled, here comes the deadliest, ugliest and most precise sow-metal you could imagine.

Listen to a recent live by Oyaarss.

Oyaarss's recent "Bads" album (adn159) has been very well received, and a lot of reviews have pointed how intense a live set by this artist must sounds like. While Oyaarss's shows are at the moment (too) sparse, we come today with something which should answer this question, in the form of a recording of the concert that Oyaarss gave during the "Border Breakers" festival in Milan, Italy, on April 7th.

This show, which contains a lot of tracks from "Bads" as well as from Oyaarss's previous discography, can be listened to in full here or right below. Sit back, click play and enjoy.

The "Border Breakers" festival was organized by Rxstnz, who also provided us with this recording. The picture above was taken by Ojars Saulitis.

Oyaarss's "Bads" (Ad Noiseam adn159) is out now and available on CD here or as digital files there.

We had already hinted at this video with two teasers, and here it is. The first official video for a song taken from Underhill's debut album "Silent Siren" (adn156) is now live for everybody to watch and enjoy.

Focusing on Martina Astner's presence and voice and featuring some bunnies as surprise guests, it illustrates one of the first tracks of this album, and should give a good idea of what Underhill is about in this constellation.

Out today: Larvae's fourth album, "Exit Strategy"

Almost nine years after the release of their debut "Monster Music" EP (adn28), Ad Noiseam is proud to present Larvae's fourth full length album, the deep and introspect "Exit Strategy" (adn160). This album, about which you can read more (or listen to) here, is now available on CD and as digital files. All pre-orders have been shipped and should be the hands of their owners.

Larvae's fourth album is a highly introspect and mesmerizing work which takes a step forward from the more electronic trilogy formed by "Fashion Victim", "Dead Weight" and "Loss Leader". An instrumental, solo work, it is a place where long strings and fragile melodies form a contemplative landscape and relegates the electronic beats to the backgrounc. An intense collection during which Larvae focuses on its most emotional and sincere side, here is a necessary album for introvert nights and profound, closed-eyes listening.

Following albums by Underhill and Oyaarss and EPs by Hecq and DJ Hidden & Broken Note / Niveau Zero & Balkansky, Larvae's "Exit Strategy" is Ad Noiseam's fifth release this year, and will be followed by new albums by Whourkr and Ruby My Dear.

Here's for a little summary of Larvae's discography:

Larvae
