It's quite hard to believe at first that the singer on this absurdly illustrated, "hardcore" bearing album on Murder Channel is Kiki Hitomi, much better known for being part of King Midas Sound together with Kevin Martins (The Bug, Techno Animal). And yet, the more you listen to this "cherry bon bon", the more you get used to the idea that no, this is not tongue-in-cheek fast breakcore, but a weird (as in Murder Channel-weird) combination of downtempo beats, dub melodies, semi pop, semi crazy singing, the whole thing quite colorful but surprisingly coherent and catchy. This is quite the unidentified audio object that this Japanese duo came up with, something we're somewhat getting used to from this label.

Monstrous value pack from Section8, with no less than 37 tracks (for a running time of more than three and a half hours) featured on this compilation. The whole thing is prominantly a hard drum'n'bass affair, with some heavy dubstep, a little bit of techno and a slight dose of hardcore. And as usual with Section8, besides a few well known acts (Current Value first and foremost, with his "Shy Flame" tune again), most artists presented here are newcomers or younger musicians. In the end, there're quite some nice tracks in the lot, though the quality varies very understandably considering how much material is presented here. Quite the long, wild ride.

In all its schizophrenia, Acrnym's long awaited return is much harder and a lot more open-minded than this musician's older releases on Sublight and Death$ucker (which were somewhat more Venetian Snares and Warp influenced). Kicking off with a metal mashup, switching to a more hardcore and rather dark tune before closing with two Wrong-music, anything goes party breakcore, "Handy Drawer" is a kind of old-school-but-good-school breakcore EP that should have no difficulty in having people bounce and thrash around.

We've shown only a very short teaser so far, but there's a full length video coming for Underhill's track "Hiding The Light", off their forthcoming "Silent Siren" album (adn156, to be released on March 12th on vinyl and CD). The shooting of this video took place on January 16th at Berlin's Subland club, and while it shows little of what the final video will look like, here's a little timelapse of this shooting, also providing a small excerpt from the song "My Shadow" off "Silent Siren".

This video was shot and directed by Kid Atari, and features Martina Astner and Dean Rodell. It will be prepared and shown in time for the release of Underhill's "Silent Siren" album. You can watch a short teaser for it here.

Underhill "Silent Siren" (adn156) will be released on Ad Noiseam on March 12th on vinyl (LP+CD), CD and digital).

Really nice, varied and rather highly awaited new two tracker from Limewax, with a hard-hitting but surprisingly melodic track on the A side and a more hardcore tune full of compressed beats and staccato rhythms on the B one. Considering who this comes from, you can expect quality, and that's just what you get. High dancefloor potential here, of course.

More or less at the same time as Roly Porter's album comes Kuedo's, and the difference between the solo works by each of these Vex'd musicians couldn't be any wider. Even further away from dubstep as his previous 12", Jamie Vex'd delivers with this Kuedo long-player a delightful and emotional mixture of vintage synthesizer sounds, downtempo rhythms and, most of all, long melodies. Imagine somebody influenced by sci-fi movie soundtracks, Vangelis and Mike Oldfield, but remove all the cheesy parts and the kitsch, and you get this uncommon but excellent album. Recommended.

If their first EP was still firmly planted in dubstep, Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin's full length album as Author is a different affair. Not geared towards the dancefloor, and a lot calmer, it is a delicate and mostly cheeseless combination of bassy downtempo electronic and jazz brass. Past the slightly too radio formatted opening track, the whole thing gets a very nice dusty, smokey feeling and builds very strong atmospheres. Recommended.

Second record for France's Chateau Bruyant, this time taking the form of a single from one of this collective's youngest act. "Rough" is a gritty and dirty UK-ish dubstep tune with a bit of fun, jumpy feeling added to the mix. Without falling into Skrillex-esque madness, it's all something which should have a broad appeal in the club, and makes me think a bit of a sunnier version of Matta. The B side, a remix by Brown & Gammon adds a bit to this dancefloor appeal, focusing on the bleepy bassline and samples. A well done party dubstep record which doesn't fall into clich?s.

To a new label, a new introductory compilation. Though this double CD was released after Signifier's very first CD (Ex_Tension's "Freedom"), it is with this value pack that this young American label demonstrates what it intends on being about. The score is that it's all pretty industrial and rarther dark, with a spectrum ranging from club-material with EBM roots to more flowy, Tympanik-esque electronica. On the menu itself are 27 tracks, often from newcomers, but also from acts people should have heard of, such as Tonikom, Millipede, Zero Degree, Lucidstatic, Oil10 or Endif. As a conclusion: good luck to Signifier in this new endeavor.

Already the fourth album by this French duo, but the first time that ones lands around my CD player. "How's Annie?" is very interesting in the way it shows an (instrumental) EBM act slides slowly but surely to techno territories. Most of the basslines presented here are firmly rooted in old school industrial sounds, but as the album progresses, the beats are straightened up, the tracks get longer, and while a retro aftertaste always hovers it all, the album turns toward modern-day techno dancefloor. Add to this remixes by Oil 10, Rorscharch Garden and a few more, and you get something which might go well with EBM fans who want to go a bit further than the canons of the genre.

It doesn't seem that Esoteric Sob is a side project of Another Electronic Musician, but here's another sign that an tongue-in-cheek, unassumjing artist name can hide pretty nice material. "Abnormal Psychology" is a highly melodic and quite daring album built on foundation of relentless glitches. Starting rather abstract but closing with vocal-supported tunes, it is a quite emotional album though obviously shows a taste for microsounds and crystal clear sound production, the whole thing combined in a successful way.

There are a lot of things to be heard in this eponymous debut by Greece's Fabrics. A lot less glitchy than what you might think from seeing this handmade (and fabric-based) minimal cover and being reminded about the rest of the seemingly very active new Greek scene (potentially spearheaded by Spyweirdos), Fabrics deliver here electronica tracks which are not afraid of thick beats or multi-layered IDM complexity. The whole thing is still very abstract, relatively dark, and has a slight industrial-ized feeling which might appeal to fans of Tympanik Audio (though in a rawer manner). Pretty well done and interesting.

Istari Lasterfahrer - Monsterous Manouvers In A Mushroom Maze 7" (Sozalistischer Plattenbau spb7021)

He's done a lot of breakcore, some dubstep, some jungle, and it seems that Istari Lasterfahrer's new taste goes for the lo-fi, chiptune dub. In a way that reminds strongly of his fellow German label Jahtari, the two tracks on this 7" are very downtempo-ish gritty constructions on 8-bit sounds and convey a relaxed, quite dub atmosphere. It's fun, it's well done, and yes, it somewhat fits well with with this musician's past discography (but more in mood than in actual sound).

Announcing Oyaarsss's "Bads" album on Ad Noiseam.

We had written some time ago that there would be a lot of newcomers on Ad Noiseam in 2012. These new acts are not only side-projects of people we already work with (such as the Underhill supergroup or Igorrr's Whourkr project), but also musicians that are somewhat newer to the scene and haven't work with the label yet. It's time now to present the first of them, Oyaarss.

Latvia's Oyaarss is not yet as well known as it should (and will) be, but this act has already had a remarkable record released by our friends of Creative Space, and recently had a remarkable remix on Cloaks's "Versions Grain", released by 3By3. It's now time for this musician to come with a first full length album, the topic of today's announcement. Entitled "Bads" (meaning "Hunger" in Latvian), this album is an astonishing work combining walls of gritty noise, gigantic percussions and a slow but deadly tempo, the whole thing bathing in resolute but subtle darkness. Somewhere between the headbang-inducing metal, the tempo of dubstep and the details of modern-day noise, this album is, we insist, an particularly impressive one, set to make quite an impression.

Oyaarss's "Bads" will be released on CD by Ad Noiseam in March, at the same time as Underhill's "Silent Siren" (the subject of another announcement next week), and was just mastered by Angelos Liaros of Mobthrow / 4Be. More information and pre-orders will come soon, but in the meantime, check out Oyaarss's website here, "like" him on Facebook there, or check his older material on Soundcloud. A taste of it all is featured below. People in Riga should also check Oyaarss live there on the 4th of February.

DJ Balli and three of his friends lay out a harsh noise topping on top of a crazy pizza concept (and pizza-showing picture disc). As usual, it burns the ears and titillate the mind, and is a good piece of collector's vinyl to put on your wall and start a conversation with.

Back in stock is this cult 2007 picture 7" from Sonic Belligeranza's DJ Balli. Once again showing that he's not only a very competent musician and experimentator, but also somebody with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, DJ Balli takes here the piss at the whole skateboard culture, building four track of aggressive, scraping noises made only of skate sounds. Harsh but fun, here's something which, if nothing else, deserves to be checked out only for its artwork and concept.

If the A side of this T.C. 12" is a rather nice, club-friendly good example of UK d'n'b, it's on the B side that things get really serious, in my opinion. "Don't Play" is a heavy drumstep-ish number which is uncommonly built upon mainly clear, distortion-free sound and supported by competent grimey vocals. For a genre which is usually full of overdrive and unfriendly sounds, this is an interesting and welcome attempt at making a slightly more accessible tune out of it, and a well done one at that.

Things are still dirty, heavy and dark on this new EP by STHS, but there's this time around less grittiness and all out distortion. Past the efficient title-track, STHS's dubstep takes a quite original direction here, with some deeper and calmer moments, before plunging again to the dancefloor. Losing in sheer strength what it gained in originality, "Mind In Chaos" is an interesting release from what seems to be an artist slowing finding his personal touch.

Though this two tracker for Ruff is his first release, France's Broad Rush has been making a name for himself quite fast in some circles, most of all through a few very well received remixes. A bit softer than most other Ruff release, this EP still has the raw, crazy dubstep feeling which forms its core, but is not afraid of integrating other elements, such as short straight rhythms, long dub lines and, most of all, an incessant play with the effects and frequencies. A successful and original record. Recommended.

A must-have for anybody into any of these acts.
