The title track is a muscular, VST-heavy piece of clear electronica served with rock-leaning vocals (resulting, as one might guess in a sort of updated Front Line Assembly-meets-EDM sound). The following four remixes focus mostly on the detailled, almost glitchy production of the original (rather than on the vocals), but it is Access to Arasaka's closing version which finally makes this tune leave the dancefloor for the home-stereo. The following Allied remix of Quadrant's "Build For War" is a bit harder and more neurofunk, with nicely chosen background samples and sci-fi sounds a plenty. "So Loud" remind a little bit of his work for the first Machine Code album in the sense that it takes the much slower tempo and heavier, sweeping basses of dubstep, then twist it all in a very personal way. Past the opening, very melodic and surprisingly pop-leaning tune, this EP is a monster of low frequencies mixed with the usual crystal-clear production from Current Value. "Statement Of Intentional Bitterness" is a heavy, straight and pumping hardcore tune which, after a surprising dub-sounding beginning, will make everybody jump and throw their fists in the air. On the flipside, "Cephalopod Carnage" isn't exactly a lullaby, but still adds some melodies and harmonies to the, yes, carnage. Bolt's side present a rather deep, slightly Sunn O)))-esque piece of slow-moving, at times gritty instrumental post-metal which cares more about the depth of its atmospheres than anything else. Petrels's part is more electronic, a bit glitchy towards its end, and goes down in a slicker fashion. Featuring a 10 minute long solo piece and remixes by Defekt, Nomina and Errorbeauty (all young but rising acts that only somebody deeply involved in music would gather here), "Collapsing System" is an adventure through acid-rich IDM, broken electro and strong but subtle techno beats. Unlike Fausten, whose massive atmospheres and heavy beats are front and center, Stormfield tries here to combine several influences and sounds into a cohesive and club-friendly whole, and manages this pretty well. Sharp but warm, playful and a bit dirty, this "Roca EP" somehow fits well with the rest of Neil Landstrumm's discography, while departing from his more IDM sounds to focus of club-oriented, booty-shaking (with a brain). It's all instrumental, empty of any of the brostep clich?s, and sounds at times quite a bit like Matta's dirtiest material. The Serbian duo Ontal (already heard with their excellent remix on Fausten's debut album), among whom we find Rottun's Noiz, for example comes up here with a very heavy, analog-sounding techno / rhythmic noise EP which would have fit without any difficulty on Hands or Ant Zen a decade ago, if it weren't for a few more techno-oriented lines. Think Emptyset meets early rhythmic noise, and you might get an idea of this interesting (and dark) collusion of styles.
