The good thing about the current wave of polymorphous, overly advertised "bass music" is that its terms are so loosely defined than some artists manage to come with things which are appealing and yet genuinely interesting. This is the case with Anstam, whose first album on Modeselektor's 50 Weapons label combines the post-dubstep bass of all this "bass" genre with some techno, some electro, a bit of sampling here and there, and results in an album which, though very accessible and a bit pop on the side, is a curious ride through current electronic sounds and an accomplished, coherent work. Quite hard to describe, but let's just say that, for once, I'll agree with the mainstream electronic press, this is quite a solid album.
