If I write "videogames sound" and "breakcore / jungle", most people will think of either DJ Scotch Egg / Ove-Naxx or the whole crunchy funky dubstep of the likes of Akira Kiteshi. This new album by Holland's Deformer (luxuriously packaged on a CD and clear 7") manages to sound like none, while being an homage to Philips's old "Videopac G7000" console (don't remember it? Neither do I). Using pure game sounds which are way more old-school that anything from Atari or Nintendo but delivering angry, energetic broken jungle tracks, Deformer manages here to do something original without sounding over-the-top or gimmicky. More than just an anecdote, a cool album by an underrated act.
