Considering that the previous "Treny" was very high in my list of best releases of last year, I was excited and intrigued by this CD and DVD package from Jacaszek on Poland's Gustaff. A conceptual work revolving around field recordings from several churches in Gdansk (it doesn't get any more gothic than this), "Pentral" is mixes drones, little accoustic glitches and massive orchestral passages with aerial ease, and ends up being at the same time heavier and less dark than "Treny". A strong ambient manifesto and a lesson in field recordings. The DVD comes with an interview with Jacaszek (sadly only in Polish) and a dolby 5.1 version of the whole album.
