Very surprising, the new (and seventh) yearly delivery from Subtractivelad. While we had left this Canadian musician with a relatively ambient "Life At The End Of The World", here he comes with a considerably more electronic and heavy handed affair. While there are still quite a lot of calm passages and the occasional nod to shoe-gaze here and there across "Kindred", it's the semi-retro, thick pads and arpeggiated melodies that dominate this album. Reminding a bit of the sort of trance revival currently carried on by Border Community, this new album is a new and, as far as I am concerned, unexpected change for this act. It might not be for everybody, but hats off to Subtractivelad for reinventing himself here.
